Over the past few years, Milwaukee has been busy building up their M18 line to have a nice assortment of battery powered outdoor power equipment however while the main staples were there, there was one key ingredient missing which was a cordless mower. The Milwaukee M18 Fuel 53 cm Self Propelled Dual Battery Battery Mower 2823-22HD has been announced. Many have been waiting anxiously.
It’s clear to see in the above photo. The deck is full of all the features that you would expect from a professional brand. A steel deck with 53 cm cut capacity, brushless motor, self propelled mode, large all terrain wheels, cut height adjustments, easy push button starts, covered battery port, and the ability to mulch, bag, and side discharge. The lights have two sets of lights, one in the front and one on the sides. This gives you both front and side illumination.
The front and side lights are shown above and as you can see, it has nice visibility in low light and illuminates around the mower nicely. Milwaukee claims that the mower has 180 lighted visibility due to its onboard lights. I have an Ego Mower with lights and it makes mowing at night or early morning easy since I can see where Im going and battery powered mowers are a lot quieter than gas mowers meaning you can mow earlier and later in the day and not disturb your neighbors in the same way a gas engine mower would.
36 Volt Mower
This mower has a dual battery bay which covers the batteries and keeps them protected from the elements. Whats interesting about it having a dual battery bay is that its not just there to increase runtime but Milwaukee states that two M18 batteries are required to operate the mower. This could mean that it is the first Milwaukee power tool that uses two 18V batteries in parallel to increase the voltage to 36 Volts, in the same way as Makitas X2 powertools. Although it seems that this is the case, Milwaukee does not go out and tell me if it’s a 36-volt mower. I reached out to Milwaukee to confirm. It is my guess, but we will wait to hear from them.
What we do know is that this mower appears to be very powerful (at least on paper) and let me tell you why I think so. Milwaukee goes out and says that their new mower produces more torque than a 200cc gas engine mower. It also comes with 12ah battery packs. This mower can run for up to 60 minutes on one 12ah battery. It also comes with two 12ah batteries. The claimed runtime is 3mph in self-propelled mode, and 3 cm for removing grass. This tells me it pulls a lot of power and can run large batteries down in an hour. The Ego 56V mower that I reviewed had a comparable 60-minute claimed runtime and a 56V 7.75ah battery. The battery has 420wh. Two M18 12ah batteries equals 432wh. Since the Milwaukee can drain it in the same time, I believe it to be as powerful as the 56-volt Ego mower.
The self propelled feature drives the rear wheels and is variable speed from 0.1 to 6 km/h, the height adjustments are made easy with a single point height adjustment with 7 positions from 3 cm to 10 cm. Like most push mowers the handle bars can pivot forward and fold the mower down for compact storage. You can also purchase a separate mower cover as an accessory for storage.
The new Milwaukee M18 Fuel mower is scheduled to launch April 2022 and it aint cheap at as a kit price. It would be interesting to see if they offer it as a baretool, which would make sense since most users already own plenty of M18 chargers and batteries. Just keep in mind that this mower is optimized for M18 XC and HD batteries so dont expect the same performance and runtime if you use it with a pair of compact 2.0ah batteries.
